Adding strips to a themed template

  • Unknown's avatar

I just started building a new site. The selected template has pre-set sections, that can’t be dragged. Also I can’t find strips or pre-designed sub sections that can be added to a page. I could do this on Wix, but I’m not sure if I’m missing something or if Word Press isn’t as flexible. Thanks in advance.

  • Hi –

Our dashboard is different from Wix so it won’t work in the same exact way. Can you tell me specifically which parts of eatsommelier.wordpress.com you’re struggling with? I’ll be happy to provide more detailed help.

Every theme has a set up guide and demo site available.

    eatsommelier.wordpress.com is using Canape.

Hi there, thanks for your note.

I would like to add 2 customized member sign up forms and manage the user data, including Forgot Password and email verification.

I’d also like to be able to add a JSON database that the user data can be matched to, to give users an output from the database.

    Many thanks.

    Ada

  • Hi Ada,

None of that is possible on WordPress.com.

On WordPress.com account management does not happen at site level. While you can use a membership plugin on our Business Plan to allow people to join your site as members, they’ll use their existing WordPress.com username accounts to do that, and you as site owner have no control over the accounts themselves or their login credentials at all.

We also do not provide FTP or database access on WordPress.com, and it’s not possible to manually create or manipulate databases on a WordPress.com site.

If you want that level of control, you’ll need to look at hosting the open source version of the WordPress software at a more traditional host like Bluehost instead:

    Thanks for the clarification.

Is it possible to migrate the website I’ve already created in WordPress.com onto WordPress.org?

Or will WordPress.org have similar theme templates?

  • There are several themes that overlap between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. The difference being that you need to install the .org version with the site. Similar to .com, there’s a showcase available. Go to https://wordpress.org/themes/ and take a look. I’d definitely suggest setting up a test site with a default theme like Twenty Nineteen to test things on before you make live changes on your own site.

Yes, of course you can move the site. We have a detailed guide. Take a look at it before getting started and write back to me if you have any questions about the material on https://move.wordpress.com/
