Adding subdomain to wordpress will affect my main domain

  • Unknown's avatar

my primary domain is ralekh.com, and I would like to create the subdomain blog.ralekh.com for my blogging site. My main domain is registered with Hostinger, and I want to ensure that adding this subdomain to WordPress.com will not affect my main site.

Could you please provide the steps to set this up and let me know which plan would be best suited for a blogging-only site under these requirements?

    Best regards,

  • Hi @jayushi582,

    Hi there,

Yes, you can use blog.ralekh.com for a WordPress.com blog without affecting your main website at ralekh.com, as long as you only update the DNS record for the subdomain and do not change the DNS records or nameservers for the main/root domain.

Since your domain is registered with Hostinger, the safest setup is usually to keep your domain managed at Hostinger and add only the DNS record (A records) needed for the subdomain. This way, your main site at ralekh.com can continue pointing wherever it currently points, while only blog.ralekh.com points to WordPress.com.

    To set this up:

    1. Create or open the WordPress.com site you want to use for the blog.
    2. Go to Upgrades -> Domains.
    3. Choose Use a domain I own.
    4. Enter blog.ralekh.com.
    5. Choose the option to connect the domain.
    6. In Hostinger’s DNS settings, add the DNS record WordPress.com provides for the subdomain.
    7. Wait for DNS propagation, which can take some time.

Connecting a domain or subdomain is available with any paid WordPress.com plan. For a blogging-only site, the Personal plan is usually enough if you only need a custom domain, an ad-free site, SSL, and the standard WordPress.com blogging features. If you need more design customization, advanced theme options, or additional features, you may want to compare it with the Premium plan. WordPress.com’s domain connection guide confirms that domain connection is available on paid plans, and connecting via DNS records lets you keep DNS management with your current provider.

You can also review these guides:

Just make sure you do not replace the nameservers for ralekh.com unless you intend to move DNS management for the whole domain to WordPress.com. For your case, updating only the blog subdomain record is the best approach to avoid affecting the main site.

Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns. We’ll be happy to guide you through.
