Adding tags to Pages

I have set up several pages in my new blog and have successfully posted on the Home Page and another Page. However, I am unable to find a way to add tags to the Pages. I am using Apostrophe 2. Thanks so much

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Tags cannot be added to pages, only on blog posts. This is how the WordPress software is designed and it’s not a limitation of your current theme.

Thanks – can tags be added to posts within pages other than the Home or Blog pages? If so, how do I do that?
    Thanks again!

  • Hi there,

I’m not sure I understand your question. Can you tell us more about what you are trying to set up? Perhaps an example will help?

You are trying to have certain blog posts show up only on specific pages? Or did you have something else in mind?

Thanks for your patience as I am a newbie to WordPress!

My site has several pages including Home, Blog and others such as Gallery, Blog Post List, The Boats, Musing & Other Stuff etc.

On the pages such as Musings & Other Stuff I have written a poem, and will add stories to it and I’d like to use tags – I have created several different tags for the different pages to which I ‘d like to attribute said tags (Sailing, Scuba, Musings & Poetry, Thoughts & Opinions).

I’m currently writing a post in The Boats page to which I’d like to add the tag “Sailing”.

    Is this possible?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi there!

I’ll be happy to share some guidance here!

I’ve looked at your site and I can see that your site is set to show all the latest blog posts only on the homepage. You have one blog post published on your site at the moment: https://shelldemer.com/2021/08/01/example-post-3/

Everything else that’s in the menu (like Musings & Other Stuff) are pages. You can’t add tags to pages because most themes do not support tagging pages. If you aren’t sure about the differences between blog posts and pages, please check out this article that explains it: Posts vs Pages.

Having said that, you can display specific posts to specific pages. That is, if you want to publish a post that will show up on the Musings & Other Stuff page, you can absolutely do that.

    Here are the steps:

    1. When writing a blog post (From My Site → Posts → Add New Post), add a tag to the post. Use something that is relevant so that you can use the same tag for future posts that you want to show on the Musings & Other Stuff page. Let’s say you choose the word Sailing as the tag. Add that tag to your post.
    2. After the post has been published, go to My Site → Pages → click on the page title Musings & Other Stuff to open it in the editor.
    3. Insert the Blog Posts block by following the instructions here: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/blog-posts-block/

After inserting the Blog Posts block, you can play around with its display settings. But to limit it to only posts with the Sailing tag, click the “Display settings” option on the right sidebar and type Sailing into the Tags field.

Once the tag has been added, click “Update” near the top right corner.

By doing the above, you’ll start seeing blog posts published with the Sailing tag show up on the Musings & Other Stuff page.

You can repeat these steps to create other tags and insert “Blog Posts block” on other pages. Then you can configure the block on those pages to pull posts only from a specific tag or a category.

Hope that helps! If you have more questions, I encourage you to go https://wordpress.com/help/contact and start a live chat with us. We primarily help with free WordPress.com sites on this forum. Thanks so much for your time and help.

I will work this out as I go and I think I have got it now, but I hope this thread can stay for future reference.
