  I’ve recently become aware that an advert for WeWork has appeared on my blog. I do not want this on my blog. This is my blog and I was never asked for permission to advertise on it. How can I get rid of it?

  By signing up for a free blog you did give your permission as the terms of service say:-

  “Automattic reserves the right to display advertisements on your blog unless you have purchased an Ad-free Upgrade or a VIP Service account”.

  So the only way to ensure ads never appear on your site is to upgrade to the Personal plan.
