Advertising Hack

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,

I noticed that my wordpress blog has an advisement hack when I arrive at my blog from my website. When I arrive at my blog from the internet (direct traffic), it looks fine. I am unsure how the hack is getting in there and how to resolve the issue.

    Website: http://www.saltsidedownchocolates.com
Select: On the website, select any of “KEEP UP WITH JULIE” links. Once selected, wordpress will load with an ad underneath the blog post.

Any thoughts on how to resolve this one?

    Thank You!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

We provide support on this forum only for the free hosted WordPress.com linked to your username. WordPress.com has been running advertising on our free hosted blogs since 2006. Many bloggers do not know this because despite the fact they ticked the box required to get a free blog, they did not read the ToS. Many also do not read features page, or advertising entry in the support documents after registering their username and blog(s). Also note that as the ads do not display to us when we are logged in many bloggers do not realize they are there at all. The only way to get rid of all advertising on our free hosted WordPress.com blogs is to purchase an annually renewable No-Ads upgrade.

    Thanks for the response!

Sounds like this is completely normal then? Perhaps I just never noticed it before? It’s just strange that direct traffic doesn’t get the ads but the referred traffic does. I suppose this is WordPress.com’s strategy.

Anyhow, if the behavior is normal, then I’m ok with that. I just wanted to make sure nothing weird was happening. Keep the hacker’s out!

    Agreed? Normal behavior?

I’m not in a position to say what is normal behavior.; only Staff can do that. I have flagged this thread for their attention and response.

Ok, thanks! Hopefully we can get to a resolution and/or a better understanding of what’s going on.

I did have a chance to look at my html code on the website and the areas where the “click” takes place look pretty benign.

They’re constantly tinkering with the ads and the way they’re displayed, but I have to say it sounds pretty standard to me.

Nice site, by the way. I think for you it would be worth investing in the No Ads upgrade. And no, they don’t pay me to say that. It’s just better for a business site not to have ads on it.

Thanks for your patience while waiting for Staff to respond to this and provide a better understanding of what’s happening.

oh it’s fine. We will figure it out soon enough.

Here’s another piece of info. On my friend’s iPad, this behavior isn’t there. On my PC it is. Perhaps the ad people know that I can’t run flash? Or, better yet, perhaps it was my latest adobe flash player that introduced the badness?

    Hmm…

  • To support the service (and keep free features free), we sometimes run advertisements, and the agreement for this has been in our terms of service since 2006.

The ads are run infrequently, and you won’t see them if you’re logged in yourself, which is why sometimes they aren’t there.

We try hard to only run them in limited places. If you would like to completely eliminate ads from appearing on your blog, we offer the No-Ads Upgrade: http://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/

Ok great, and thanks for the interest. That’s two votes for normal behavior.

One more and we can call it settled.

Well macmanx is Staff so I don’t think we need another Staff member to repeat what both he and I have posted, right? :)

Oh, sorry. Missed the fact that MacManX is staff.

Very good. Case closed! Thank You!
