Advice on local hosting for production type environment

  I am looking for a guide to setup “Local hosting” for WordPress that replicates an internet hosting solution, the reason for this is I have overheard our IT teaching staff talking about using something like WordPress for students during lessons.
  Can you provide any guides on how to best configure a server solution to host a site or sites within our network and any guides on how to best install WordPress for performance and HTTPS/SSL please?
