After world

Hello, seems for the past few weeks my site has become haunted.
And it’s not even Tomb Cleaning time!
I used to set up a filter when I had a G/A account.
Is there a way I do this in the Jetpack stats on WordPress.com please?
Cheers. -
Hi 146386q, can you let us know which site you’re struggling with and send a few more details? We’re happy to help how we can.

Hello P,
Ok so when you say your site has become haunted, are you able to share more details about the problems you’re facing please?
Are you getting undesired usage or visits to your site?
Many thanks in advance.
-
Oh, sorry!
I was meaning ghosts~
When I used G/A I could set up a filter to remove it.
Or, at least from my stats.
From reading around I find that Jetpack claims to be the best at keeping spam etc out.
So, wondering if there is a setting somewhere I have missed so i can do the same in WP?
Ie, keep the ghost spam from appearing in my stats.
Or anything else I can do.
Popularity is one thing, but I would rather it be in the realm of the quick~
Thx
P -
Thanks for the details.
As far as I understand, the Ghost Spam is something limited to Google Analytics, as spammers take advantage of their Measurement Protocol.
You shouldn’t have to worry about that on WordPress.com.If you have some particular concerns about your WordPress.com stats, please let us know, and we’ll have another look.

Hi, that’s reassuring, thanks.
But I am pretty sure I do have ghost spam and it is a WordPress hosted site.I am basing my assumption on the fact it is a free account on a WordPress sub domain, not registered with G/A receiving a sudden spike, of multiple hits from mostly 3 or 4 countries with no pages viewed, no referrer no author etc etc.
In short, it is as if there was never a visitor.
So I am guessing ghost spam.Would be very happy to be proven wrong~
Cheers

Hello there,
Looking at the stats there, I can’t see anything untoward.
Whether a site is on the free plan or a paid plan, doesn’t have any baring on traffic.
Looking at at the referrers, it looks like there is referrers from search engines. It’s probably that the site has been bookmarked, and are returning visitors.
I hope this helps.
-
Good morning.
At least for me.Ahh yes, I agree.
I have a thorough understanding of traffic and its generation.
Sorry, I was not clear.I mean that as a free plan, my site is a subdomain of WordPress and is therefore not included in my G/A . Conversely, if it were paid, I would use one of my own domains and G/A account.
So I was addressing your comment re Google, not traffic.
You are correct, the flavour of WordPress has very little bearing on traffic perseI did consider the possibility of book marks or a user having shut down her machine leaving my page open.
However, thinking deeper, it did seem extraordinary that 5 users in the US, 3 in the UK and 1 in Japan would all, more or less at the same time, decide to visit , book mark or close down with my site open.Even more extraordinary is that there is no previous trace. I mean, if someone were to book mark etc, would they not need to have visited first?
Would they not show the day before as a regular visitor?
Complete with referrers and author? Also, from memory, if a visitor should close down with a page open, when he restarts he shows as a returning visitor in my stats. Along with author.
So I assumed bots.Correct, there are search engines shown in the stats.
But looking deeper out of a dozen or so visits, only one or 2 can be traced to search engines.Fore example, yesterday, Friday and today, there are 2 search engines and authors credited from Denmark and Chile respectively. The rest have no trace.
I would bet those 2 are the only “genuine” visitors.
Most days there are no search engine or author listed.
The others are ghost spam.If this was one of my own develop[ed HTML sites I would start combing my code for a stray bit of script. But I have no idea where to begin in WordPress.
So, to summarise: yep, if it were just one visitor returning ad nausea from a previous visit with a referrer and author trace, then I would agree with you. Nothing out of the normal.
But these?
Nah.
Got to be bots.Cheers

Got it — usually we try to filer out bot traffic, but it’s possible some bots aren’t declaring themselves to be bots.
It’s not something I’ve really seen here, but we do have a way to deal with spam referrers if you think that’s why these folks are visiting your site:
https://wordpress.com/support/stats/#marking-spam-referrersThis will remove them from the referrers section so you won’t see a spammer’s “payload” link. But their visits will still be mixed in with your stats, FYI.

but it’s possible some bots aren’t declaring themselves to be bots.
Hahha, more than possible!
I will check out the link you sent, thanks very much.
Actually in all but 2 cases there is no payload link so something must be working inside the bowels of WordPress.Pity we can’t X them from stats though.
Any chance code security has been compromised?
No stray bits of script there?
How would I know.?
Just for interest.Pity we can’t refer these to a data base as we can Email spam, scam etc.
Can I block an entire country?
We do not do business with USA so no loss there, mostly it is the Amazon crawler anyway. The bulk of my email spam originates ex USA routed through obscure servers with lower secularist standards. Thanks for your help.
Sorry for the confusion at the start.
I thought my humour would be obvious!

Just a quick follow up:
I read the article you linked me to, ta, I had already been there, done that, bought the Teeshirt. From memory in the year or so I have used WP there has only been 2 occasions where the referrers show as spam links and I deleted them.
As I said, the latest attacks have not carried any links so there is owt I can do.
Sadly.
Nice try though.
Cheers

Hi there,
Any chance code security has been compromised?
No stray bits of script there? No, this is not the case. Our security hasn’t been compromised in any way.
Can I block an entire country?
No. That’s not an option.
In general, I don’t see anything out of the ordinary on your site’s stats. What you’re describing is perfectly normal activity for all sites. So, I wouldn’t worry much in your case.
-
Hello, i would agree, it is, sadly today, perfectly normal.
I was just looking / hoping for a way to filter them out of my stats.
Seems not so…Cheers
