Alt-text and meta tags
-
Hi,
I have inherited this website – http://www.eiregulf.com – and have the FTP access for it. How do I change the alt-text, titles, descriptions and meta-tags without messing up the code?
Thank you!

Hi there,
That site is not hosted on our servers, but with Blacknight.com, and it’s using a different version of WordPress, called WordPress.org.
The best place to get help and advice with your version of WordPress (if your host does not support the software itself) is here:
https://wordpress.org/support/
That said, if you’re referring to media/images, you should be able to make these changes directly in the media library in WP-Admin. Media files fall under site content, and you don’t use FTP to make changes to content. You only use FTP to make changes to the software.

Hey,
Thanks a lot. Ill try and get help on WordPress.org. So if I want to make ant changes to the meta tags, alt text and sitemap i should do it via FTP?

It really depends on exactly what you want to do. To add alt-text to images, you just edit the images in the media library in WP-Admin.
For a sitemap, it’s best to use a plugin. Our Jetpack plugin adds a bunch of WordPress.com features to your site and allows you to edit your site using your WordPress.com account. Among other things it also adds a sitemap along with some other SEO tools to your site. For example, you can use it to add meta tags for verification with Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster tools. You can also use a plugin like Yoast SEO for this.
For other meta tags, you’ll need to edit your site’s files, and for that you’ll need FTP.
