An edit link appears on my homepage right below the site title.

  I need to remove the link titled ‘edit’ which appears on my homepage right below the title of the page.
  the link sends me to my user account on wordpress.com which is obviously something i can’t have.

  only the logged in owner of a site sees that link; visitors won’t.
