Anonymizer…why…new?

  I am recently having problems accessing wordpress.com because sites that use anonymizers are blocked through my companies firewall. Could someone tell me if using an anonymizer is new for wordpress and also what this means for the user. Why would an organization (high school) block sites that use an anonymizer? and why is it good to use an anonymizer? I need more facts for my argument that blogs are “safe” and they are being stifling.
