Another domain name
-
This may sound a little strange. I have purchased a domain name (http://tonyhuby.com) through WordPress and am very happy with it. However, a friend has advised me that the domain name http://tonyhuby.me.uk is available to purchase at only £7.00 a year. He advised that I should snap it up as it was a bargain and I’m tempted.
So my question is basically, Why would I purchase another domain and what would I do with it? Any ideas? I’m open to all advice. Thanks in advance.

Hi there,
Purchasing multiple domain extensions for your brand name is actually a smart move for several reasons:
- Brand Protection. By owning different variations of your domain, you prevent others from registering those domains, ensuring that no one else can use a similar web address to impersonate or compete with your brand.
- Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Having multiple domains can also help protect your brand identity online and can potentially improve your site’s visibility in search engine results.
- Marketing and Memorability. Different domains can be used for marketing purposes and to make it easier for visitors to remember how to reach your site. For example, a .me.uk domain might appeal more to a UK audience and can be used in targeted marketing materials.
- Future Expansion. If you ever decide to expand your website or create different branches of your content, having additional domains gives you more flexibility to do so.
Once you register the new domain, it’ll automatically redirect to your primary domain tonyhuby.com. This means no matter which domain your visitors type in, they’ll end up on your site.
If you have any more questions about how this works, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Thank you for your quick reply. My next query is, what charges are involved to register another domain name?
-
The charges for domains differ depending on the domain. You can find the complete list of available TLDs and their respective charges at this link: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-pricing-and-available-tlds/#standard-domain-registration-and-renewal-pricing
For .me.uk domains, the cost is $8 USD per year.
I hope this clears things up! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need further assistance.

Thank you. I have seen that the price works out as £8.40 (GBP) per annum. However is there another charge to register with WP, or is that included in the annual price?

Hi @tonyhuby,
Do you plan to use the domain with a separate site? Or do you wish to simply redirect the new domain to your existing site at tonyhuby.com?
If you wish to redirect the new domain, there won’t be any other charges, just the domain registration fee. If you create a new site, you’ll want a WordPress.com plan to go with it so that you can set the domain as the primary address.
A third option is to simply register the domain and not have it go anywhere. If you do that, the domain won’t load any of your websites, but you still keep its ownership. Here’s how to register just a domain without a site:
When you register a domain on WordPress.com, you can create a website to show with that domain. If you just want to claim a domain name to use later, this guide will show you how to register new domains without creating a website. Register a Domain Without a Site To purchase a new domain name (or multiple domain names) without creating a website for it, take the following steps: VisitIf you take this option, you won’t pay anything other than the yearly domain registration fee.
Hope that helps! Feel free to let us know if you have more questions.
