Are subdomains locked for life…?

  I’m sure this isn’t *actually* a community question, but one for those running wordpress itself. Unfortunately however there’s no direct option for contacting wordpress by email, so here goes.

  I’d like to use a name.wordpress.com. That “name” is registered, however it has never been used other than a generic “hello world” post which was logged back in October 2005, almost a full decade ago. So, the real question is, are subdomains / names locked forever once registered? Or is 10 years a suitable amount of time to ascertain that the registrant does not intend to further use the blog / site / functionality?
  Yes, I also appreciate I haven’t posted anything for a bit either, but I want to have a relaunch with a new name and would personally also expect to be deleted if I became inactive for a highly extended period of time.

  For reference, I don’t need help with the blog at v8maverick.wordpress.com, this is obviously a wordpress.com forums auto-append at the point where you press “submit”…

  The short answer is yes, subdomains are locked for life.

  WPcom does not recycle blog addresses. They can be deleted or remain dormant forever after registration.
  https://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/ should answer your question.

  The only option you have is to contact the site owner directly if there is an open comment form or contact form on that site. If there is none, or you do not receive a response, that’s the end of the story.

  But you do also have the option of registering a Custom Domain and using whatever underlying WPcom address you register.
