Attach blog to established website

    I want to start a blog for our company, and we’re going back and forth about what’s the best practice. The president wants to have a site name of blog.company.com, and I’m thinking company.com/blog would be better. I’m not sure how (or if it’s possible within WordPress) to set up the second option, or how to fully articulate why I think it’d be better. Any guidance is appreciated.

    Hi there,

    I don’t know that either method is necessarily better than the other. It’s more a matter of preference and what’s technically possible on your hosting setup.

    If you have only one site, with the blog section forming part of that site – something you can set up in an existing WordPress site with minimal effort – you’d assign a page as the blog page on the site, and that will naturally live at the /blog subdirectory.

    However, if you’re creating a separate site for the blog, then using a subdomain is simplest as it just requires creating the subdomain in your domain’s DNS records and connecting it to the site – using a subdirectory is also possible, but requires server-side modifications to the site, and specifically on WordPress.com-hosted sites that’s not possible. So if you do decide to go with /blog rather than blog. then you won’t be able to use WordPress.com – you’ll have to use the open source WordPress software at another host instead.
