Auto renew question

Why does auto renew renew 30 days before expiration?
I received an email stating my Premium subscription was set to expire March 26, 2014. I also got one asking me to update my CC info.
When I updated my info I saw that the renewal would take place a full 30 days prior to expiration on February 26. Why does it do this? Will your computer then ask for payment on January 26 2015? It should renew no more than one week prior to expiration.
And yes, I disabled auto renew and set a reminder on my calendar to renew on the 24th of March.

Yes, we auto renew domains 30 days before their expiration date. Why? Since letting a domain expire means you may not be able to get it back in the future, we want to ensure that everything is taken care of in advance. We do send out notification emails before charging your card, as we try not to surprise anyone. This is mentioned in the “my upgrades” support document and when you set up your auto-renewal. But it can also be easy to miss, so I understand the confusion.
Please let me know if you have further questions or if anything is unclear.
