Automatic renewal of a domain what was set to manual renewal

An account I created is set for a manual renewal but renewed automatically anyway. I set this site up for a friend using my credit card. He’s barely used the site and I cannot find how to remove my credit information so this does not happen again since the renewal notifications were sent to him and not me. Why did it renew anyway if it was set to manual?

  • Hi there, I’d be glad to take a look at this for you, but I don’t see any recent transactions under your username. Could you let me know which domain was renewed? Was your credit card used while logged into your friend’s account?

You can remove your stored credit card details by going under Personal Settings and deleting any stored credit-card details. If you had logged in on your friend’s account, the information might be stored on his account instead of yours.

The username on the account I am inquiring about is ecwineschool. I see the Personal Settings page you are referring to but there is nothing listed as stored credit-card details on this page or any other that I can see from the dashboard. Is it because it is not set to be an automatic renewal? Like I said before it was never set to auto-renew. I made sure not to leave the page like that when I created it just in case it was not used in the future.

  • Thanks for the info – I see the renewal you’re referring to, for the domain ecwineschool.com.

I think the reason the credit card information is no longer stored is that its expiry date comes before next year’s renewal date, so it was automatically detached.

If the user ecwineschool no longer wants the domain ecwineschool.com, they can request cancellation of the domain and I’ll be glad to issue a refund to your card. Just a heads-up that if we cancel the domain, they may never be able to repurchase it, so we should only do that if they’re sure they’ll never want the domain again.

If that’s the case, please let me know and I’ll send them an email directly to get the process started.

Okay, thanks for looking into this for me. I’ve sent my friend an email to ask if he still wants to use it, but as it is a very busy holiday weekend for his primary business I’m not certain how quickly I will get a response. I no longer live in the same country as him either so it would be very difficult for me to call and reach him.

Okay, I finally heard back from him. He wants to use it again in the fall so I will leave it as is and get reimbursement from him. Thanks for your help.

  • You’re welcome, glad you sorted it out.
