I know this might seem like a simple question, but I need to make an exact copy of my blog (a wordpress.com blog) that I can download and view in a browser. I have done this with SiteSucker (for Mac) for other websites.
Will that work also with WordPress.com blogs?
Thank you.
David

You could certainly try it and see – my guess it that it will generally work, but it’s not something we officially support. Dynamic tools built into the site – such as the search function – won’t work.
If you let me know the purpose behind doing this, I may also have other suggestions for you.

Hi Kathryn,
So glad to get your answer. I did actually try with SiteSucker, and it downloaded thousands of “documents” –I don’t know where they were coming from, since my blog is not so large, and continued to do so until I stopped it after many hours. Odd.
I need to archive the blog as part of academic documentation for a course I teach at a university. Each semester, which each new group of students, much of the blog will change. I need to archive each semester’s blog in a way that looks very close–if not identical to the way it actually looks.
Any help is MUCH appreciated.

Hi David, thanks for explaining your goals here, it’s helpful.
Here’s one idea – would it be possible to set the site to private at the end of each semester, and then start with a fresh blog the following semester? If you needed to repeat the content, you could do an export from the most recent site, and then import it into the new site.
Let me know if this might be a workable solution.

Hi Kathryn,
That’s a good idea–I tested that, and am now trying again after having purchased the theme from the original site for the second site in the hope that it will duplicate with the same theme settings. Will advise as soon as that import is completed.
It seems so odd to me that this is a tricky thing to do. Don’t millions of people need to archive their blogs so that they are usable offline?

Meanwhile…the import came into the new site: formatting is quite different, most of the images are missing. ??

You’ll need to reset the theme settings manually.

Actually, it’s a pretty rare request. :-)

I’d be glad to take a look if you provide a link to the original site, and the second site.

Hi Kathryn,
Thanks for the insights–quite useful. Would be very grateful for any tips about how to manage a more successful export/import.
Here is the link for the first iteration:

You’ll want to go through your settings and make sure they are the same on each site. I suggest opening up your Settings pages side by side for both sites, and making sure they match.
For example, you currently have the original site set to display a static page as the front page, while the new site is set to display your latest posts, as you can see here:
Original Site – Settings > Reading:
https://parsonsfabcreation.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.phpNew Site – Settings > Reading:
https://parsonsfabcreationf12.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.phpOnce you choose a static page as your front page on the second site, things should look more like what you’re used to.
After going through all your settings to make sure they are the same as needed, if you see specific posts or pages that are missing images, I’d be glad to take a look. Just send along a link to an example of a specific post or page on both sites.

Kathryn, I’m really happy to have all this help! Yeah WordPress!
Will do this work in the next days, and let you know how it turns out. -

Hi Kathryn,
Hope you had a nice weekend. The transfer worked ok–clean up needed, but manageable for this iteration.
I have a new question. The old site has the nice url: parsonsfabcreation.org New site has a clunky url: http://parsonsfabcreationspring13.wordpress.com/
Would it be a nightmare to use parsonsfabcreation.org for the new (and future iterations) of the blog, and archive the old blog and future old blogs in a systematic way, for example PFC.Fall2012; PFCSpring2013, etc. ?? The point is to keep the active blog in the spotlight with the more attractive url.
Thank you!

In theory, you could transfer your Value Bundle and its custom domain parsonsfabcreation.org to a new site every term, and let all the old archived sites simply keep their default free WordPress.com addresses. You’d need to put in a request for staff to do this for you, so it would be something you’d need to think about every term.
When you create each new site, you could give it a name that you’ll ultimately use as its archived name, for example: pfcfall2012.wordpress.com, pfcspring2013.wordpress.com.

Hi Kathryn,
Ok, let me think about this. I know I’m trying to contort WP in a way it isn’t quite designed for–it’s because, just fyi since you seem interested, because the university’s software, BlackBoard is problematic in all sorts of other ways!

That is interesting! I guess each system has its pros and cons. Good luck and let me know if I can be of further help. :-)
