The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

By default the front page by default displays all published posts. You can enable and disable comments on free hosted WordPress.com blogs on this page > Settings > Discussion
Discussion settings is where you set up defaults for comments.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/You can also override the default settings and enable or disable future comments on any individual post or page.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/Note: By default, new blogs on WordPress.com will have the Discussion hidden. You can reveal it by clicking on Screen Options http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options/ on the top right corner of your Admin page, and checking the box that says Discussion so the module is included. http://en.support.wordpress.com/modules/#list-of-modules

Oops! sorry for the unintended repetition in the first sentence.
There is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts (not pages) http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ and we cannot post to more than that one page. The front page of the blog by default will display your posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. If you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page called for example “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for posts.
To do that create two pages > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.

I have set the home page up as ‘static’ with the blog posts set to the ‘Workshops’ page.
I want to get rid of the comments box on the front page, but none of these suggestions work. If I go to settings – Discussion and delete the default ‘leave a reply’, I can’t get the page to save with a blank there. I can change ‘leave a reply’ to ‘comment’ (which is what I have done), but I can’t delete the box. Surely no one wants to have comments on the front page of their site!
The screen options only changes my view of things, not the site, and the ‘edit page’ has no option for removing the comment box.
