Basic free WordPress.com questions, reset to default, 2018 theme & Gutenberg upgrade
-
Hi, have a few questions 1 Can you reset a free wordless.com site to it’s default, ie to entire default settings, theme etc? 2 Is the current default wordpress.com theme still ‘twenty fifteen’ or a later year? 3 When will the ‘twenty eighteen’ theme be released to WordPress.com? 4 Will the Gutenberg editor with customisable ‘blocks’ be an opt in or out out for WordPress.com, and when? Thanks so much –
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi sharonetter840607940,
1 Can you reset a free wordless.com site to it’s default, ie to entire default settings, theme etc?
There are a couple of options:
- Empty all content, categories and tags from your site
- We (staff) can reset a site to match the content and layout of a theme demo site
2 Is the current default wordpress.com theme still ‘twenty fifteen’ or a later year?
Twenty Sixteen was released after Twenty Fifteen and there is now a Twenty Seventeen theme.
3 When will the ‘twenty eighteen’ theme be released to WordPress.com?
I don’t have any information about a release date but en.blog.wordpress.com is a good place to keep up to date with announcements.
4 Will the Gutenberg editor with customisable ‘blocks’ be an opt in or out out for WordPress.com, and when?
Again, I’m unable to give you an exact date for when Gutenberg will be available on WordPress.com so I recommend subscribing to en.blog.wordpress.com for news. As far as I know, the current editor will still be available but I don’t know whether Gutenberg will be opt in or opt out.

Thanks, yes I understand all that, will clarify my question
What is the DEFAULT THEME NOW – if someone
A already has a wordpress.com account but adds another site
B creates a NEW ACCOUNT and new site from scratch?
What default theme do they get then in those different circumstances? I have a feeling if you’ve created your account a while ago and add a second or third site you get ‘twenty fifteen’ but if you create a new account NOW I think you may get ‘twenty seventeen’ by default.
Can you confirm if this is correct or not? Would like to know for teaching purposes
Thanks -

WordPress.com does not have one default theme. During site creation you’ll see a questionnaire asking what type of site you want, and your choices there determine which themes will be suggested to you initially, or what theme will be applied automatically if you skip the theme selection step. But once the site is created you can select from any of the themes available in My Site ->Themes.
Also just a note regarding Twenty Eighteen – no such theme exists. The Twenty- themes are not made by WordPress.com, but by the Core team on make.wordpress.org, and they have not released a new default theme for this year, as the focus there is on Gutenberg. Currently new WordPress installs with the open source software are still bundled with the Twenty Seventeen theme.

Ta, I appreciate the reply. I thought I got ‘twenty fifteen’ when I created a new site, and students got ‘twenty seventeen’ because I had an older account.
Just trying to not recreate umpteen sites in order to see what a NEW wordpress.com site does by default.
So you can click Continue & skip the ‘what will your site be about’ option. Last time I logged in you were prompted to rank yourself between 1 – 5 as beginner or expert? Is this gone now?
Can you confirm then what default theme you get if you don’t tick the box stating what the site is about? Is it now twenty seventeen?
Thanks again – do I need to warn students that they’ll log in to their free wordpress.com one day from August and the Gutenberg editor will be there instead of Visual and HTML ? Thanks again –

That question only appears if you’re creating a new account, not if you’re creating a new site in an existing account. We’re also constantly testing new signup flows, so you might not always see the exact same flow when creating a new account.

There is no one default theme that is used in this case, but we have a list of default themes that are activated on a rotating basis, and the themes in the rotation are constantly being changed.

Gutenberg will not be forced on sites, and it will still be possible to use the regular editor if you prefer.
