  I am a little disappointed by the options to browse the blog archives; the scroll down menu is very restrictive.

  I would like to see something like a blog post calendar plugin, e.g.

  Monthly grid view calendar widget highlighting archived and/or future posts.

  You can, of course, create your own in a text widget. http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/text-widget/
