BLOG POST FACEBOOK SHARING COUNT RESET TO ZERO,

    I have a post on my blog that had been shared several times on Facebook. The number of counts shared used to appear on the post.

    However, the count has now been reset to zero after I edited the ‘permalink’. Is it possible to recover the lost number of Facebook sharing counts?

    Hi there,

    Social media sites calculate sharing counts by literally counting the number of times a given URL has shown up in their platform. If anything has modified the URL, like a domain or permalink change, the number of shares will go back to zero.

    Sadly there is nothing we can do about it, as those numbers come straight from Facebook and we just display them. To date Facebook has not offered a tool to address this issue, so if sharing counts are a concern for you I do not recommend changing your permalink unless it’s a new post that has not been shared much (or at all)

    You could try changing your permalink back to what it was originally and this should allow the share counts to show correctly again but there is no way to assign those to a new URL.

    Thank you for the answer. I will definitely heed your advice not to change permalinks if sharing count is important to me.

    Yes, I would like to restore the previous permalink, but I couldn’t remember it.

    How do I trace the history of my URL permalink changes to enable me to restore the previous one I desire?

    Hi there,

    I checked your revision history along with our system and I don’t believe there is a way to check the permalink history of a post from our end. How long ago did you make the change?

    I’m sorry, we don’t have a way to check on what it was before.

    The hope was that there would be an archived copy at https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://victorscorner.com/ before this change, but there does not appear to be.
