Build a website front-end without a WordPress cart

This is my big WordPress question: can I build a website ‘front-end’ with WordPress that has product filtering capabilities without having a store/cart with WordPress?

I have an ecommerce site for the company I work for, but the CMS used to edit it is limiting. It is a propriety content management system from a local vendor. We also have a multi-level product drilldown that was designed many years ago. It requires many clicks to get to a product choice to add to the cart. WordPress seemed like an attractive alternative because of the flexibility in building a WordPress site. I am looking to create a new ‘front-end’ website with WordPress where I can build a product display to show all we offer and have product filtering capabilities, but I don’t want a shopping cart/store with WordPress. Can I build a front-end product display with the ability to filter products and then link people over to my existing shopping cart when they have decided what they’d like to purchase?

If so, how do I proceed?

  • Hi there!

What kind of filters do you have in mind?
The easiest and best option would be to directly move your online store here, using WooCommerce (available on plans Business and eCommerce).

If you only want to showcase your products, that’s also not a problem – it’s just a matter of deciding how you would like it to look. You can add one page with images linking to the store; you can create portfolio projects for each product, etc.
The filtering is more difficult. To be able to only display some products, each would need its own page, tags categories. To create a filter, you will likely need a plugin. I don’t know any particular one that would help you – the usual way is to do it via WooCommerce.
