Building locally or canceling .com for .org

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi all,
I’m helping a friend with her wordpress.com site but feeling very restricted with the setup, since I usually develop locally and then push to a self-hosted server (ie. with .org)

I would love to migrate her to this system but i’m sure WordPress won’t refund her the remaining 8 months on her account that she’s paid for.

Does anyone have advice for how to build and develop without disrupting the current site?

    Thanks in advance!
    Kobi

PS i’m not sure why the fair-game blog was automatically associated with my post (or why I can’t edit my original post?!) so please disregard that…

  • Hi there,

It looks like your thread was missed originally, but a volunteer has now tagged it for a staff response.

Can you please provide the address of the site in question so I can see the situation? Our refund period is 30 days, and only the owner of the upgrade can request it, so it would be better if your friend posted here herself.

What exactly do you want to “build and develop”? WordPress.com is intended for people without technical knowledge who just want to focus on creating and managing their content. We provide full support to help them do this. By pushing someone who doesn’t have the technical skills to run their own WordPress installation, and who don’t necessarily want to learn those skills to a self-hosted set-up anyway, might actually be doing them a disservice. You’ll not only take away from them our very stable infrastructure with unlimited bandwidth, but also our support, which includes day to day support in managing the front end of the site, but also automatic software updates, backups and security behind the scenes. I really want to urge you to give her an honest breakdown of the pros and cons of switching to self-hosted, and let her make the choice rather than forcing her into it.
