building new site to replace old (active) site

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a site that is currently functioning (old platform) and I want to build a new site with wordpress (StoreFront). Trying to figure out the best path to build the new site on wordpress and then when it’s ready to go live, I would replace the old site with the new StoreFront site.

1- Can the old site stay operable while I’m building the new site?

2- I’m also planning to have wordpess host the site, would I transfer that site now or wait until the new StoreFront site is complete?

  • Hi there,

1- Can the old site stay operable while I’m building the new site?

If you’re planning to host the site with us on WordPress.com, yes. When you create a site with us we give you a free *.wordpress.com address, and you can build your site at that address, migrate any content you need to, and only switch your domain over once you’re ready.

Note that to use your own domain you’ll need a paid plan, and to use the Storefront theme and the WooCommerce plugin you’ll need to be on our Business or eCommerce Plan.

If you have existing store products on your current site, please contact live chat support after buying a plan so we can take a look and advise you on the best way to migrate those products over to your new site.

2- I’m also planning to have wordpess host the site, would I transfer that site now or wait until the new StoreFront site is complete?

I’m not entirely sure what you’re asking here. What exactly do you want to transfer?

It’s not possible to transfer an existing site as-is to WordPress.com. You’ll create a new site with us, and then migrate your content only from the existing site to the new site, and when you’re ready, transfer your domain to us.

We have a detailed guide on migrating from another platform to WordPress.com here:
