Buildsite before mapping domain

Hi. I’m new to this and stupidly registered my domains with GoDaddy not realising that I couldn’t then just map them to a WordPress site without paying loads of money to both organisations.
GoDadyy sid I should just build my WordPress site then call them to map the domain across – the implication being that this wouldn’t cost me anything. But Icannot see how to start building on WordPress without first paying to map the domain across thus incuring either high costs with WordPress because of having to upgrade or high costs with GoDaddy to map it. I’m only doing this for a hobby and have no idea what to do now. Thanks. -
You have two choices.
You either stay with GoDaddy and build your site there using the WordPress.org software or you build a site here at WordPress.com. Here you’d need to purchase an upgraded plan to map your domain to a WordPress.com site.

If money is an issue and your site is only going to be a “hobby” site then you didn’t have to buy a custom domain at all. You could have created a free site here as long as you were happy with your address ending in .wordpress.com.
