Bulk Remove of category in posts – WordPress.Com site

How can I do a bulk removal of a category in posts? I can set them in bulk edit mode, but I can’t find the way to ‘unset’/clear a category already set on a post. Since this is my wordpress.com site, I don’t appear to be able install a plug-in to solve this either.
I would expect that in the bulk selection, I would get the list with the categories selected that are already set or like other software if not all of the selected posts have that category selected a grey filled checkbox. Then if I select the box, it would en-mass set them or if I deselected them, it would be cleared. I keep seeing this as an on-going question, but no answers.

Hi @jocompto, if you want to clear one category from all posts, you can just delete that category. Otherwise you might try the bulk editor in wp-admin:
