  I own a domain and hosting through ipage and wish to use it to make my wordpress site, but it says that domain name is not available when I try to build my site

  If you already own that domain name then you can’t buy it again here at WordPress.com. As incoming domain transfers aren’t currently available here the procedure is to keep your domain where it is but map it to a WordPress.com site. You do this by purchasing a paid plan first which gives you a free credit to map an existing domain.
