I was wondering how much we can purchase word press for. We are a college and would need around 40 to 50 licences.

It depends what you are trying to achieve. WordPress doesn’t have to cost anything. At WordPress.com there are free plans if you don’t require additional features and custom domains. The WordPress.org software (different to here at WordPress.com) is free but needs to be hosted somewhere that needs to be paid for. If you wanted a class of students all to be using WordPress.com there has been known to be issues if all the sites were created at the same time/using one IP address at the same time. I have added the modlook tag to ask a member of WordPress.com staff to reply here but if you could supply further details of your plans it would help them to give you further advice.

@emjatt12345 that information is correct. WordPress is GPL licensed so, no need to buy seats or anything of the sort. You will just need hosting, a domain, and a means to manage the site, whether you opt to do that yourself or have a company like us do it for you.From there you’ll have quite a few features built in to handle the site (or sites) as you like, or you can hire a programmer or designer to work on new features for you. Just note if you need to add custom programming, you would need to host your own copy of WordPress, or use our Business (or VIP) plan:
