I am curious to know what are the differences for buying a domain name through the Basic plan on WordPress for $4/mth vs $3.95/mth on bluehost? How does it all work?

  • Hi there,

WordPress.com and the WordPress you’ll use with Bluehost are two completely different things.

With Bluehost you’ll be using the open source WordPress software maintained and supported by the WordPress community on WordPress.org. With that software you have full control, having the ability to customize the software right down to the source code should you want to. But you’ll essentially be on your own – if your site breaks, you’ll have to fix it, you’ll be responsible for your own security, backups, software updates, etc, unless you specifically have a hosting plan that includes those things. Your hosting plan might also have limitations on the amount of server space available for your site, and the amount of bandwidth, i.e. how many visitors you can get before you have to pay extra.

On WordPress.com we use a modified version of the WordPress software, which is limited in the ways it can be customized. But we offer full support for the actual software for sites hosted with us, and we take care of all security, maintenance, software updates, backups, etc, no matter what plan you’re on. You also get unlimited space and bandwidth for your site – the only limit is for the amount of media files you can upload, but you’ll never run out of space for the site itself.

You can see a comparison of the two versions of WordPress here:
