Buying a subscription via PayPal
-
When I try to purchase a plan via Paypal, the popout redirect asks me to add a bank or credit card. From reading the WordPress Help section I gather that this is because the payments are reoccurring. The problem is that I have already linked my bank account to my Paypal and the redirect won’t let me add it a second time. Unlinking my bank account and relinking it via the popout didn’t help in any way either. Please help.

Hi there,
Have you tried contacting PayPal? Once you’re redirected to PayPal we have no control over that process.
-
Yes, I have talked to a Paypal Rep and they told me everything was working as intended and that I should contact the vendor :)
-
Thanks for explaining. We will get this sorted out. Try clearing your browser cache once to see if it makes any difference. Here’s how:
Once that’s done, go ahead and try to add the plan again. If it still does not work write back to us here. We can add the plan from our end and email you a manual payment form.

Clearing my browser cache did not resolve the issue. I’d be glad if you could add a one year personal subscription to my account. :)
Best regards

Hi there,
A manual payment link can only be used if you intend to pay via credit card. Payment via PayPal is not possible via that payment option. And if you have a credit card you can just pay via the normal checkout form selecting the credit card option instead of the PayPal option.
Of what pop-out are you speaking? Our checkout form doesn’t use any pop-outs for PayPal payments, but instead the entire browser window gets redirected to PayPal.com to complete the transaction, after which PayPal redirects you back to WordPress.com.
Can you confirm if that’s what is happening here, or are you seeing something else?
-
Oh, yeah I was speaking about the redirect, I guess I called it a popout because thats what usually happens elsewhere. Is there a possibility of working out a deal where I send you the money via Paypal in advance and get the status added retroactively after payment has been confirmed? I do not have access to a credit card, unfortunately, or else I’d just go the path of least resistance. Also if I can provide any additional information to help work out the technical kinks, I’d be happy to help.

I appreciate that, but all we would be able to help with here is if the redirect to PayPal was not working correctly. As my colleague mentioned above, once you get to PayPal’s website, they’re in control of what happens, and if they’re not accepting or recognising the bank account that you have added to your account on their end, that’s something they need to look into.
I know they referred you to us, but we really have no control over what happens on their end. If they can provide any information more detailed than that you “should contact the vendor” that might give us something to follow up on from our end.

There is no way to directly send us money via PayPal. The only ways to pay for a WordPress.com upgrade is via the checkout form, or via a manual payment link, but PayPal cannot be used for the latter.
We do also accept prepaid credit cards for purchasing WordPress.com upgrades, so if you’re able to get one of those you can use that instead.

Okay, my call with the Paypal rep basically went like this: He poked around in their backend and confirmed for me that the following conditions were met: 1. My Paypal account is in no way restricted or banned from making purchases. 2. My bank account is properly linked in their system and Paypal is in no way restricted or banned from withdrawing money from my bank account for purchases. He then dug around a little more to see if there was anything else going on with my account that would be out of place but found nothing. So we ruled out the obvious failures that could lead to the problem from my/Paypals end. The rep then explained to me that the individual implementation of the Paypal API leaves some room for configuration to the vendor. He explained that could be things like whether the vendor accepts payment via Paypal balance or not, whether or not fees are charged and things alike. I assume WordPress forcing a valid bank account/debit card to be linked for reccurring purchases is also one of these things. Lastly the rep told me to get in contact with the vendor in question and check in with them if the problem was (un-)intentional behaviour on their end and to work out a workaround with them. That is the gist of it. Hope you can work with it in some way.

Hi there,
Sorry this took so long, but we think we figured out what’s going on.
On our end we have things set up that we can charge a credit card directly via PayPal, but not a bank account. If you don’t have a card and only have a bank account linked to your PayPal account, you’ll also have to transfer sufficient funds for the purchase directly into your PayPal account, so you can then use it from there to pay.
