Can I allow the site visitors to customise what shows on their dashboard?
-
I would like to know before I start creating my website if it is possible to make an intranet so that a menu with all the possible categories/links is shown on the side of the website and the user can drag to their dashboard the bits that they want ( so that they can select just the ones that are relevant to them).
In order for this to work they I imagine the should have a way to log in or for the website to know who is who so that when they visit the site again they don’t have to reselect which information they want shown on their dashboard.
Any information is welcome as I have not worked on creating an intranet before and the requirements are quite specific.
Thanks

Hi,
No. A visitor with the ability to customize the website would have to be a user in one of the top level contributing roles (administrator or editor). Any changes made by an administrator or editor would affect the appearance of the site for any visitor.

I thought that perhaps Screen Options settings might be local settings which affect only the PC and screen being used by the user at the time of access. However, the Screen Options support page says:
Saving Screen OptionsYou don’t have to worry about saving any of your Screen Options. WordPress saves your configuration automatically for you in a cookie on your computer and in the database so that when you use another browser or a different computer, everything will look the same.

Perhaps I misinterpreted the paragraph from the Screen Options support page quoted in my last post. Maybe Screen Options can be set differently for each administrator. There might be a separate cookie saved in the database for each administrator.
I’m also unsure if other administrative settings made by one administrator would affect what another administrator sees in the dashboard areas. You may add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this topic to call for staff attention.

Hi,
Thank you very much for your response. Looking at the information you’ve provided I don’t think it is possible to do as it seems that the website would have the same look on every computer. I would need it to remember each person’s different dashboard without them being administrators or have to change any of the main code as it is meant to be an easily accessible page for people at work to see their relevant links.
Is there any other software you can think off that would allow that? I am just in the research stage so if it would be something that would make it difficult for the other employees to access/use then it is not really
worth it.Thanks again
