Can I block an abusive person from looking at my blog?

Last night somebody left a very nasty comment on one of my blog posts. Luckily I have chosen to moderate all comments before they are displayed publicly, however this comment did upset me. Obviously the commenter didn’t use their own name, instead calling themselves “John Smith”. Rather than just sending any more comments from this person automatically to the spam folder, I would prefer to block them entirely from reading my blog to nip any potential problem in the bud. I have their IP address – can I block this? Many thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • I am very sorry to hear that you had trouble with someone like that. It sucks that some people are so unkind in the world. And it can be amplified when they have a keyboard to hide behind.

Sadly, there isn’t a way to block someone from seeing a public website. IPs are frequently dynamic and change. Above that, they can easily be spoofed or hidden with a proxy server.

You can make your site private and only let those who you choose see it. But that can limit a lot of your potential traffic. It will, however, keep out the crazies.

Ah OK, many thanks for your reply. I’ve only recently started blogging so am still getting used to it all! I don’t really want to make my site private as I’d like to maximise the number of views it receives. Thanks for the advice though. I’ll just keep an eye on the comments and delete where necessary.

  • Happy to help. Thanks for using WordPress!
