can i cancel my domain and register it elsewhere?
-
I am using the free trial right now, through which I registered a domain. However I have decided that a more simple website platform might be a better fit for me and was planning on cancelling my WordPress account. I understand that I can’t cancel the domain registration as more than 48 hours have passed. It isn’t clear to me what the best solution is at this point however. Of course, I would rather not pay for the domain if it is possible to cancel it and then register it through the other service (in case it helps, the other service I would use is SquareSpace). Is there any way to do this or do I risk losing the domain?
Thank you!The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Since you want to keep using your domain, I urge you not to cancel it. When you cancel a domain, you give up ownership of the domain and it can take up to several weeks to be released by our registrar. It’s also possible that the domain won’t ever be available again for you to purchase once it’s canceled, so there’s definitely a risk in doing that.
If you want to take that risk and cancel the domain so you can try registering it elsewhere, let me know and I can help you with that.
However, to make sure you don’t lose the domain, I’d recommend that you keep the domain registered here at WordPress.com and point the domain to the other service. That way you can make sure you won’t lose the domain, but you can still use it with a different service.
Squarespace has a guide for mapping a domain you purchased elsewhere, and I can help you make the necessary changes on this end if you’d like to do that.
Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)
