Can I make a password protected page uneditable?

I would like to make my portfolio page password protected so that I can control who views the content, but I do not want users with the password to then be able to edit the page, which is what seems to be the case right now. Essentially I want many users to be able to access the page (which hosts my portfolio files) as read-only. I am using the free theme ILLUSTRTR

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Only site administrators can edit pages.

You see an “edit” link because you are logged in with your administrator account. If you logged out, or used a different computer, then viewed the page, you would not see the “edit” link.

Thanks, I thought that was the case originally but when trying to look at it in different browsers, I always saw the ‘edit’ link after entering the page-specific password. But perhaps I was logged into WordPress on those browsers, too.

As I try to retest this today, now the password protection functionality isn’t working at all — I can’t get it to prompt me to enter a password, and my portfolio is publicly available. My only thought is that perhaps because I’m using a portfolio template page and didn’t password protect each project that I uploaded that somehow the portfolio template is overriding the password protection? Any ideas? I’ve cleared my cache, etc. to make sure I’m not accessing old versions of the website/page.

    Thank you!

  • Are you trying to make just the portfolio area password protected? Or the whole site?

Yes, just the portfolio page (kellyannecahill.com/portfolio).

  • So it appears that there is a disconnect between then portfolio system and the privacy settings on the page itself.

I’m going to have to look into this more deeply. But for the moment, it is not working.

  • I do not have any news as of yet. I also do not have an estimate of how long it may take.

  • So, a troubleshooting question for this. Did you make the page “portfolio” before or after you set up your portfolio?

Hi there. I made the page ‘portfolio’ before setting up the portfolio. (Only because I had initially been using a different template that didn’t have a portfolio option.)

  • So, for the moment, there is no way to password protect the portfolio system. It is something that we are looking into, but it appears that it is not a bug, it is just the way that the system is built. The ability to have a page called “portfolio” at the same time that the portfolio system displays at yoursite.wordpress.com/portfolio/ is confusing, I agree. And it is something we are looking to address and make more clear.

I wish I had better news for you, and I have passed along your reasoning for wanting a protected portfolio to the developers. But for the moment, that is all the information I have for you.
