Can I set certain formatting defaults in WordPress free such as captions?

It’s a bit difficult to summarise as a title. Defaults such as:

    • Make caption text (under images) superscript or subscript by default
    • Set links to open in new tab by default

Minor gripe just wastes time having to do these manually every time.

Yes, but with limitations. On the free WordPress.com plan, you generally cannot set global formatting defaults for specific elements like image captions in the same way you can with custom CSS or theme modifications.

    Your options are usually:

Use Reusable Blocks/Patterns with your preferred caption formatting.

Check whether your theme provides typography or block style settings in the Site Editor.

Manually apply formatting when adding captions.

For true site-wide caption styling, you’d typically need a plan that allows custom CSS or theme customization. If you share whether you’re using WordPress.com or self-hosted WordPress.org, and which theme you’re using, I can provide more specific guidance.
