How can I try WordPress to see if I am happy with the interface before deciding. I already have a domain name and existing hosting arrangements which I need to leave in place until the new website exists.

Hi there, you can start with a free WordPress.com website and then add a plan if it suits you. The interface is the same on all sites, but it may contain additional links depending on your plan.
