What are trying to do? People have come up with a lot of workarounds for wp.com. We just might have a solution for you.

All the steps are at wordpress.org
Are you sure we don’t have a solution for you? We might!

I am a realtor and I’m trying to put together a blogsite similar to the following:
http://www.sandbarstosunsets.com/
http://www.portorangejuice.com/ -
Aside from the fact that wordpress.com blogs are non-commercial, no direct selling, the only things I saw in a quick look at those blogs’ front pages that you could not duplicate here are the drop-down selector on the first one and the ‘rate my blog’ on the second (as if that helps to sell real estate).
That drop down is very handy for narrowing the field.

I did not know that owrdpress.com is not for commercial selling. I understand those 2 blogsites are wordpress. maybe wordpress.org If so, How would I go about setting something like that up? By the way, Thanks so much.

I currently have an ala mode website and I called them to see if I could load the wordpress.org on my website as a blog. They went to wordpress.org and said no, something about them not supporting ftp. Any suggestions on how I can set a similar blog? Possibly blogger.com? Just asking. Thanks
-
Right, they are self-hosted blogs using the free software from wordpress.org. The information to set up a blog that way, as I said above, is at http://wordpress.org
Most, but not all, wordpress.com blogs have wordpress.com in the footer. When you see “powered by wordpress” that’s a self-hosted blog using the free software.

I’d suggest another host, frankly. ftp is hardly exotic. It doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg.

There are some featured hosts at the wp.org site. I chose DreamHost when I took one of my .com blogs self-hosted recently. It has 1-click wp installs and a social conscience. If you click on my name and then the Green Hosting button near the top of the sidebar, you’ll get some info. But please check out the extensive information at org too.

Thank you, I’ll check it out. So let me summarize. I’ll need a host such as dreamhost as a host then I can go get wordpress.org as a free download and load it to this dreamhost. Then I can start my blog. Which will let be add plugins, and widgets. Correct? Will this option allow me to customize my blogsite similar to the ones I mentioned above?
again Thanks so much. -
You’re welcome. With a 1-click install you don’t even have to download the wp software. When you set up your account, you choose which platform you’d like and it’s installed for you, no heavy lifting. Themes and plugins are downloaded and uploaded.
Yes, you can use plugins, widgets, java etc to your heart’s content. Browse the plugins and see what the possibilities are. Look through themes and see what might work for you.
