Cancel in-progress domain transfer

  • Unknown's avatar

I recently began a domain transfer from the soon-defunct google domains to WordPress.com, hoping to use a custom theme I have for my website. Unfortunately, I have made a mistake, and intended to keep hosting elsewhere and use wordpress.org, not .com

I cancelled and refunded my plan once I realized it was not what I need, but now my domain is in the middle of transfer to wordpress.com, leaving it unusable and likely incurring more fees if i just wait for the transfer to complete and immediately transfer it back out of wordpress.com again.

Is there any way for me to put in a request for cancellation? The transfer has not even been approved by google domains yet, so I would love to simply halt the process on wordpress’ end.

Thanks in advance to whoever is familiar with this type of situation and can help me out

  • Hi there,

I’ve reviewed your account and your domain is now in Pending Registry status. This means that the transfer order has been sent to the registry and should complete in five to seven days. This article explains the steps in case you need a reference:

    https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/

It is not possible to cancel the transfer from your WordPress.com dashboard, but you could check with your current registrar to see if it is possible to cancel it from there.

If it is not possible to cancel the transfer from there, you can still use your domain with another host after the transfer completes by updating your DNS based on your host’s recommendations. We have instructions for updating your DNS here:
