I canceled my domain name yesterday, the cancellation was in a 3 hour window of signing up. When will it be released and available to use elsewhere? Thank you

    Hi there!

When a domain is cancelled it is sent back to the registrar for re-release. It usually takes a few days, however we have no control over how long this process takes and registrars are not required to release previously registered domains.

Let me know if you have other questions!

would the registrar in this case be wordpress.com? is there any reason they would not release it? What would you suggest I try to go if i would like to have that domain again? I don’t mind paying the extra fee but just did not think bluehost would let me use a domain from wordpress.com over at wordpress.org. Any suggestions would be great. thanks

It looks like the domain was cancelled yesterday. Give it a couple of days and let me know if it does not become available. I can look into it.

So you know for the future, once you’ve registered a domain you never need to cancel it in order to use it with a different host. You just need to update your name servers or DNS records. Or you can transfer the domain to the new host.

Some registrars don’t allow you do update the name servers or other DNS records, but in those cases you can always transfer your domain to another registrar.

I know it can get a little confusing, so let me know if you have more questions about domain registration.
