Cancelled my Premium plan within 24 hours but also cancelled domain

    Hi there,

I cancelled my Premium account the day after I signed up (wasn’t what I needed), but I had also registered my domain through WordPress and the option was there to cancel that as well, so I did. I didn’t know anything at the time about domains not being available after registration was cancelled. This is a huge frustration for me.

I would like to know what options are available to me. I mean, I had only just signed up and registered the domain, so the honorable thing for WP to do–given that I changed my mind within 24 hours– would be to simply provide the refund and release my domain. But if WP is not willing to do that, what other options are available to me?

I am interested in having this resolved as soon as possible. And I don’t wish to publicly post the domain name. I’m surprised that WP doesn’t provide any direct contact options to sort these kinds of things out.

    Thanks for your help.

I see that WP added “The blog I need help with is elegantlystated.wordpress.com” but I am not contacting you about that blog. I set up an account to create and host a website by another name. Hopefully, someone will be able to look into my account history with my username as, again, I don’t wish to publicly share the domain and website name.

  • Hi there,

In this case you cancelled the domain a day after you registered it, so it should be released again by the registry in five days. So you should be able to register this domain somewhere else by early next week, provided someone else doesn’t register it before you do once it is released.

I didn’t know anything at the time about domains not being available after registration was cancelled.

We show a confirmation pop-up warning about this and asking if you’re sure that you had to accept in order to cancel a domain.

so the honorable thing for WP to do–given that I changed my mind within 24 hours– would be to simply provide the refund and release my domain.

We have already issued a full refund for your plan. That happened the moment you cancelled the plan, and you can see a receipt for that transaction in your account billing history page.

Whether or not a domain is released or not after cancellation is not something we have any control over, though. That depends on the type of domain, when the domain is cancelled, the policies of the registry controlling the particular domain extension, and the policies and processes followed by our domain partners.

In this case you’ll need to wait until after the weekend. In other cases it can take more than a year before a cancelled domain is released again, so one should never cancel a domain one still wants to use. You can always transfer or map it if you want to use it somewhere else from where you bought it.
