Cannot publish pages and posts
-
Hi there,
Some of my students can’t publish pages and posts. When they make a new topic, the can only choose ‘save as concept’ of ‘ready for review’. In quick edit mode they can choose ‘publish’, but when hitting the save button, nothing happens. The overview still gives ‘concept’ after the name of the item and the website itself doesn’t display the post or page.
This is especially annoying for them, since they have to learn to work with WordPress. Without seeing any feeback, the learning is extra hard. And the pages preview don’t show the pages in any menu, so they can’t see what the effect is of adding pages, changing numbers, parents etc.
The blogs that need help, are:
– marianvandenberg.wordpress.com (private)
– zwartcoaching.wordpress.comI hope you can see what goes wrong.
Thanks in advance!

What is the user role assigned to the students you refer to please? Go to Dashboard > Users > All Users
http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/
Also what are their usernames please?
I’ll tag this thread for a Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting. -
Hi Timethief,
Thanks for your quick response. They created their own blogs, so they are administrators. I don’t know their usernames, but I’ll ask for them.
I’m already subscribed, but thanks for pointing it out. How do you mark a thread for staff follow-up and can I do that too?
Thanks again!
-
They are Admins on their own blogs only. You assign the specific user roles to those official users you add to your blog.
I already marked the thread for Staff attention by tagging it in the sidebar.
-
O, I think there’s a misunderstanding. This post IS about their own blogs, not about them contributing to mine.
I understood you tagged the thread, I’m just curious about how, because I cannot see anything like that in my sidebar, while typing this thread.
-
I typed “modlook” into the sidebar assuming that the students were official users of your blog. As they are not and as they have their own support issues, they need to log in under their own username accounts, state what their blog URLs are, and communicate with Staff here in this thread to get the assistance they need. Working through intermediaries is never the best way to go.
-
I know, but the problem is: they’re not very handy with computers and since I’m the teacher I’d like to (think I need to) provide them with this service.
I already requested their usernames, so I’ll be able to provide them in the near future.
What does ‘modlook’ stand for? Moderator, take a look?

What you describe as clicking links and having nothing happen is indicative of a browser related issue or a connectivity issue. Note what follows as it isolates what Staff need to know from each student in order to assist them.
1. If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.
2. If you are using an IE browser in compatibility mode please disable that mode. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/use-compatibility-view
3. If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/
(a) Try clearing your browser’s cache http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050
If applicable see here for instructions on how to clear the cache for Chrome and Safari on the iPad:
http://browsers.about.com/od/howtousemobilebrowser1/ss/safari-ipad-clear-cache.htm
http://browsers.about.com/od/howtousemobilebrowser1/ss/How-To-Clear-Browsing-Data-In-Chrome-For-Ipad_6.htm(b) Make sure that you have both third-party cookies enabled and JavaScript enabled
http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/
http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12654(c) Disable all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily.
(d) Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/
Add both *.wordpress.com and *.wp.com to your list of trusted sites under the Security tab. Make sure to uncheck the box for “Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone.” http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/#frequently-asked-questions
4. You can use this link to see if your flash is up to date. http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ If it’s not then go to http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/ and download and install the latest version of flash.
5. Try using another browser.
6. If you are not successful let us know:
(a) Exactly what kind of device you are using to connect to the internet and to WordPress.com.
(b) Exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://supportdetails.com/
(c) Exactly what you experience including what any error reports you receive state. -
Hi timethief,
That’s a great lof of help. I’ll send this to them and post their answers a.s.a.p.
Have nice day/evening!

Thanks for contacting the students. It’s 9 AM where I live in Canada. Best wishes for a good day to you too. :)

One of my students replied so far: the username is marianvdberg62. This is from a person who is really not that much into computers and she’s probably not able to try all the steps given above. I asked her to get help with that, since it’s important.
I hope staff can see what happens without the steps… that would really help her.

Hi there,
I just checked your students’ sites:
– marianvandenberg.wordpress.com
– zwartcoaching.wordpress.comBoth have now published posts and pages on the sites. Are they still having any trouble with this or is it all working now?
-
Hi rachelmcr,
That sounds great. The blogs are protected, so I can’t see it. One of the students (zwartcoaching.wordpress.com) resolved the problem with the browser checklist. The other one didn’t report yet.
But if you say both sites show both posts and pages, I’m happy :-)
I’ll ask the students to show me their working sites on Monday. Thanks!
I’ll mark this thread as resolved.

Great! :) If your students have any other trouble with their sites, just let me know and I’d be happy to help.
