Can’t sign into site.

When I try to sign into my site as an admin to add a post or page, it gives me a 404 error. I can see the site as a reader, but not sign in. What’s happening? I signed in earlier today (around 4pm) and it was fine. Help! I need to post.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • You are currently already logged in as the account which owns https://figmentsandfables.wordpress.com/

Are you referring to a different site?

    I’m talking about figmentsandfables.com

  • That is a self-hosted WordPress.org site, which we really can’t help with here.

To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

WordPress.org has complete documentation for self-hosted/installed versions of WordPress.org at https://wordpress.org/support/ and support at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

With that said, make sure you’re logging in at http://figmentsandfables.com/wp-login.php

This is the only sign in I have. It’s where I’ve gone for all my support. The login you posted at the end of your post is where I am hitting the 404 not found. WordPress.org does not recognize any of my usernames or emails. So now what do I do?

Also all of my posts show up on wordpress.com when I sign in.

  • Your posts from that site show up in your WordPress.com account, because you have that site connected to your account with us via the Jetpack plugin. That allows you to manage the content and certain settings for the site via the WordPress.com interface, but we have no access to or control over your admin account on that site, nor to any settings on your server at your hosting provider, Hostgator.com.

That site has its own unique admin login that works only for that site, and that was created when you first installed the WordPress software at Hostgator.

If the login page gives you a 404 error, it means you made a change to that site to move the login page to a non-default URL. The people in the WordPress.org forums will be able to help you troubleshoot that.

WordPress.org does not recognize any of my usernames or emails.

Have you ever posted in the WordPress.org forums before? If not, you won’t have an account there, and will need to create one before you can post there. WordPress.org is the website where the WordPress community collaborate on the WordPress software, and an account there will have no connection at all with either your site’s unique admin account, nor with your WordPress.com account. Unlike how it works on WordPress.com, a WordPress.org account is not a requirement for using the WordPress.org software for your site.

Thank you. The issue was resolved. I appreciate the information. I set this up six years ago and clearly did not keep good records. :)

  • Glad I could help, and that you were able to regain access :)
