category gone after rename
-
Hi,
I just renamed 2 category on my site, the 1st one went ok, but the 2nd one (Y1 – Digital Photographic Practices) didn’t. I had a load of others under it they are all gone, if I look at a post that was under there it still says the correct name of the category on it but there is no order anymore and none of the posts can be seen anymore on my site!! An example post is called ‘Assignment two – Seeing like your camera, tutor feedback’
Thanks,
David Ward

ok so it fixed that bit myself but it keeps doing it, there is a major problem with renaming a category. If you look at the category list in the dashboard it’s nothing like the one on the site.

Hi David,
I took a look at your category list under Posts > Categories in your dashboard, and it matches the list on your site. If you are seeing a different list on your site, your browser may be showing you an old cached (saved) version of the page. To fix this, you may need to refresh your browser or clear your browser’s cache and cookies.
If you have any questions or other concerns about this, please let me know!

Hi,
I had to put all the caategories back as I’m using the blog to hold my degree work and a section of it is being marked this week.
Every time I rename a category it does the same thing again. Also earlier I went to change the categories on a post, in the list on the right of the edit page the ones I have ticket are all at the top and not in the correct place. Have a look at this post http://blog.davidw.info/2013/07/09/bruce-gilden/Thanks,
David

Hi David,
Thanks for explaining your concerns further. Let me see if I can help you sort out what’s happening here.
One thing I wanted to mention is that the list of categories in your blog’s sidebar won’t change based on the page or post you’re looking at. You are using the Categories widget, which displays a full list of all the categories on your site. You can read more about that widget here: Categories Widget
When you add a post to a category, the category is listed under the sharing links at the bottom of the post. For example, the post you linked to has a list at the bottom that says, “This entry was posted in Photographers, Research, Research.” Those are the three categories you selected for that post. Note that it won’t have information about the parent categories — for example, the two Research categories have different parent categories, but those aren’t listed on the blog post.
The category list on the right of the post editor will move the selected categories for a post to the top of the list, so you can keep track of them. The order shown in that list won’t have any effect on what is displayed on your blog.
You can also learn more about categories and how they work on your blog here: Categories
I hope this helps clarify what’s happening, but if you have additional questions please let me know! :)

Hi,
What about when I rename a category, it looses it’s place in the hierarchy and ends up on it’s own?
Is there any alternative to the to the Categories Widget that would give me more control over the list? As there is more on there it could be good for me to separate each module of the course out and make a menu across the top of the site to each section.
Thanks
David

That shouldn’t happen, so if it does happen again please let me know the name of the category and the steps you took to rename it. I’ll be happy to take a closer look!

If you want to make a menu across the top of the site, you may be interested in using a custom menu on your site. This menu will be used throughout the site (not a separate menu for each section). You can use this guide to set up a custom menu: Custom Menus
You could also use the widget visibility settings to show a different widget on different pages throughout your site. You can learn more about widget visibility here: Widgets

Hi,
I have created some test categories and a test post to show the problem I’m having.
In the dashboard I made a new category called test level 1, then under that another called test level 2, then under that 1 3rd called test level 3. Then again in the dashboard clicked new post and made a post in the test level 3 category called test post. Looking at the site and the dashboard it all looks correct…
Test level 1
– Test level 2
— Test level 3, post in hereI then click quick edit on test level 1 and then 2 categories, now when you look at the site the test level 3 category is now on it’s on at the bottom of the list. In the dashboard test level 1-renamed is there but I don’t see test level 2=renames or test level 3 at all.
Also I see a Research category as appeared at the bottom of the list on the site, I have no idea where this should belong and doesn’t show in the dashboard. Thanks,
David

Hi David, thanks so much for describing the problem for me! I did some testing and was able to reproduce the problem, and now I have our team looking into it. I’ll let you know what they find out.

Hi David, our team is looking into this issue, but they have not been able to resolve it yet. Sorry for the wait — it’s a fairly tricky issue, but rest assured that we’re still working on it!

Hi David,
We were able to fix the categories on your site, but we’re still investigating the root cause of the problem. You might want to test out any changes on your test categories before changing the main categories you are using on your site, as we haven’t been able to entirely resolve this yet. Thanks for your patience!
