  • Hi there,

Think of a domain as a cover you put on a book. You can change the cover without in any way affecting the content, and in the same way you can change a domain without it affecting the content of your site.

That said, domain are registered for a year at a time, and can’t just be edited afterwards. So if you want to change the domain, you’ll need to buy a brand new domain, and then set it as your site’s new primary domain. Then you can either cancel the old domain, or just disable auto-renew and leave it to expire. You can change the primary domain at My Site ->Manage ->Domains.

Keep in mind that once the old domain is removed from the site, all old links, both internally on your site and links that you shared elsewhere, for example, on social media, will stop working. Changing domains can also lead to a drop in traffic coming from search engines for a few weeks, as search engines will have to re-index your site at the new address first.

Then I notice you have a G Suite subscription linked to your original domain, laurenhawkinsphoto.com. If that’s the domain you want to replace, also keep in mind that cancelling the domain will cause that email account to stop working, as it’s linked to the domain.

Let me know if you have any questions about this. You should also be able to contact live chat support at https://wordpress.com/help/contact if you’d prefer to discuss this with someone in real time.
