    Will a change in domain name affect my SEO or traffic flow to my website?

    Hi there, I am currently using a free domain name offered by wordpress (xxx.wordpress.com). If I were to link a purchased domain (xxx.com) and link it with my existing website (xxx.wordpress.com), will it affect the SEO or traffic flow to my new website?

    Hi there,

    You’ll see a temporary drop in traffic from search engines, as it will take a few weeks for them to re-index your site at the new address. But once that process completes your search ranking should go back to how it was before.

    If we’re speaking Google specifically, there’s a way to mitigate this – before you switch to a custom domain, verify your free address in their Search Console:

    Then, when you add the custom domain, you can use the Address Change tool in search console to notify Google of the change of domain, and that should minimise the impact on your search rankings.
