Changed blog address confusion. Did I hit a bug in the system?

    Hello,

I first registered a blog under the name “pessimization.wordpress.com”, but I changed my mind and now settled for the name “sufficientstatistics.wordpress.com”. So, I used the “change blog address” link in Dashboard -> My Blogs to move it. Something must have gone wrong, though, since my settings are lost in the new blog (like time zone etc.), and under “My Blogs”, there are now two blogs by different domains but the same name, “Positive Thinking”, which was an experimental name which I tried before moving (too obvious though). The names appearing in the list don’t seem to be affected by name changes in Settings -> General in either of the blogs, which is another indication for that something went wrong in the transition. It is confusing that the blog names in the list do not correspond with their actual names (sometimes I can’t distinguish which is the old and which is the new one and have to select by trial and error).

I would like to free the pessimization domain for other people to use, if that is possible; if not, I would keep it, but at least free the blog of all content. I cannot seem to achieve that by any means other than contacting support.

What should I do now? How can I confirm that the transition is complete? I fear that working with the current state of affairs may lead to strange things happening and me losing my work at some point.

    Thanks,

    Johannes

Well, technically nothing went wrong. You had one Wp.com blog and you moved to a brand new WP.com blog, so all the settings were different.

I understand that as all you wanted to do was change URL and the docs led you to believe it was that simple, well, you went for it with those expectations.

It does not work that way. Somewhere around Item Six there’s a note that you will be permanently and irrevocably deleting the original URL. Nobody ever notices this.

No, not all the settings were different. Just some, for example the time zone and other settings on the General tab. Others have been carried over, like the ones under “Sharing”. How do you explain that? It is definitely not what I expected.

Yes, indeed, I was led to believe it was simple. If I had had the impression that it would result in a confusion, I would have simply opened a new blog and started over by pasting in the content manually.

What does this “note under item six” have to do with all of this? You are mixing different things, and I don’t see how accusing me of not paying attention is being constructive here. I am here trying to get help, you see.

There was a note similar to what you say, but it was actually asking me whether I would like to permanently discard the old address (See http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/ under Item 7). I deselected that, so that is presumably why the old address still shows up in the “my blogs” list.

    What confuses me is

    1. that some settings got carried over and some didn’t.
    2. that the name of the two blogs in the “my blogs” list is always identical, even though I can change it in the dashboard of the blogs.

That’s all, and I would like to know if I can safely carry on without having to fear that some data corruption occured.

    Thanks.
