Changed domain and now have no access to my website

  • Unknown's avatar

So, my current blog is saltyandsour.com, a domain I bought using DreamHost. I’ve had the site since March and have been using WordPress to post. Today, I bought a new domain off of DreamHost and as I was waiting for it to authorize, I wrongly changed the Site Address (URL) and WordPress Address (URL) to saltyandsour.wordpress.com in order to later replace that with my new domain. As soon as I pressed Save Changes I was automatically unable to access my dashboard, and a page came up that said that I ‘do not have the necessary privileges to access the dashboard’. When I log in, WordPress says I now have no website, and when I go to saltyandsour.com it is a skeleton page. I know that saltyandsour.wordpress.com is a site that already exists, so did I give access to that user by mistake? Is there no admin to my website anymore?
How can I regain access? I tried doing saltyandsour.com/cpanel like the videos suggest but I don’t have a control panel I suppose.

    Suggestions?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

The only site you have in your account is the free WordPress.com site, http://grittylemon513790449.wordpress.com/

saltyandsour.wordpress.com belongs to a completely different username account.

Neither of these sites have any connection at all with your site at saltyandsour.com, which is using the open source WordPress.org software, and is hosted on Dreamhost’s servers, not ours.

Changing the domain of a site using that version of the WordPress software needs to be done via a specific process, or you just break the site and lock yourself out of the dashboard, as you have found. Only Dreamhost support can help you fix this, as only they have the required access to your site. As your site is not on our servers, we have no access to it at all.

For future reference, you can find the instructions for correctly changing the domain on a self-hosted WordPress site here:

    https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL

But in this case it sounds like you want to start using your Dreamhost domain with your WordPress.com site instead, correct? In that case, you wouldn’t change the domain on your site at all. Instead, you’d need to buy a plan for the saltyandsour.wordpress.com site, and then add a domain mapping upgrade for the saltyandsour.com domain and point the domain here.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

But saltyandsour.wordpress.com and your Dreamhost site will always be two different and separate sites. You can connect your domain to the one or the other to control which site the domain will show.
