Changes to templates were somehow deleted and I want to know why

  I used a Site Editor to modify some templates that came with the theme (I did not create copies). I also created template parts by duplicating the existing ones.

  One day, all the changes/customization I made to the templates are gone and all the duplicated template parts are deleted as well.

  I asked WordPress support if the theme updates removed all the customization, and they said the updates will not delete it. I asked if they can tell me what happened, but they are not responding to me anymore.

  Could anyone tell me what can be a cause of this deletion?
