Changing domain suffix?
-
So I own a domain ending in .net and when I transferred it to WordPress, WordPress offered the option of also giving me the same name .biz and some other options. I’m tempted but haven’t made up my mind yet. It appears from the way the checkout form loads that this is equivalent to just buying a second domain. This leads to my question, which is: Can I start drafting a WP site with the domain I currently have, eg, mystuff.net, and later transfer that site design to, eg, mystuff.biz, after purchasing it?

Hi there,
It appears from the way the checkout form loads that this is equivalent to just buying a second domain.
That is correct. Many businesses especially buy up multiple domain names with different extensions in order to control that particular namespace, preventing a competitor from buying a matching domain and causing confusion with the brand.
Can I start drafting a WP site with the domain I currently have, eg, mystuff.net, and later transfer that site design to, eg, mystuff.biz, after purchasing it?
You can register and switch to a different domain at any point, yes. Just keep in mind that when you do that, you will see a temporary drop in traffic from search engines as they reindex your site at the new address. Additionally, if you also cancel the original domain at the same time, any existing links that use it will break – if you keep both the old and new domain, we automatically redirect links to whichever address you have set as primary on the site.
You also won’t need to transfer anything – your site itself will not change in any way, but you’ll just add the new address to it, like putting a new cover on a book.
