Changing Email Address on Registered Domain Name
-
I’m trying to find the procedure for updating the email address on a domain name registered with WordPress. The problem that we are having is that the existing email address is no longer valid so the domain name administration procedure for updating email addresses won’t work because it is sending a verification email to that now invalid email address. Does WordPress.com have a way to deal with this kind of issue? Other registrars do.

I’m not seeing any domain upgrade purchases associated with your account. What is the domain in question? We’ll take a look and see if we can help.

Does your friend have access to the WordPress.com user account that owns the domain? For security reasons, we can only work with the owner when dealing with domain registrations.

As mentioned in the original post, we have tried to use the WordPress.com administration to update the email address but because he doesn’t have access to the original email address associated with the domain name, it’s not possible to respond to the email message that WordPress.com uses to confirm that the email change should be allowed.
We have also asked this question privately through the support messaging in his account but have yet to get anything but a generic response that did not answer the question.HERE IS THE QUESTION THAT I WOULD LIKE ANSWERED:
If the email address associated with a domain name registered at WordPress.com is no longer valid, what is the procedure to get that email address updated.
I understand that the owner will have to identify himself in some way to you to make this happen. PLEASE JUST LET US KNOW WHAT THAT PROCEDURE IS!Please don’t just send us to this link:

We’ve done that already.[As a tech support persons myself, I’m embarrassed by how awful this process has been.]

Hi there,
If you don’t have access to the email address, in order to regain access to a WordPress.com account and subsequently to the domain owned by it, we’ll need one of the following things:
* A transaction ID for any upgrades purchased for the account
https://en.support.wordpress.com/transaction-id/
* The WordPress.com account activation link, which we sent to your email address when you first registered with us.

Hi,
Thanks for the additional information. Getting closer but the issue is not one of getting into the WordPress.com account. They have the login credentials for that. They can get to where you can change the email address associated with the domain name (not the WordPress account) and even submit the change.
The problem is that when you submit that updated email address, your system sends an email to the old address to authorize the change. Because there is no access to that email address, it the email address on the DOMAIN NAME cannot be updated. The admin interface for that currently says:
Domain is pending contact information update.
It’s been stuck there for several days.
So, I’ll repeat my question yet again:
If the email address associated with a DOMAIN NAME registered at WordPress.com is no longer valid, what is the procedure to get that email address FOR THE DOMAIN NAME updated. NOT an update to the WordPress.com admin email address.
Or am I missing something? Does the domain name email address get updated when the WordPress.com admin address get updated?

The problem is that when you submit that updated email address, your system sends an email to the old address to authorize the change. Because there is no access to that email address, it the email address on the DOMAIN NAME cannot be updated.
Our domain provider sends an email to the old email address, and also to the WordPress.com account email address. Either of those can be used to verify the change, along with the email sent to the new address.
But you will need to click the link in both the email sent to the new address, and in one of the other two. There is no way around this – these verification steps are an ICANN requirement for domain contact information updates, and we have no way to bypass those requirements.
Please ask the domain owner to contact us directly at https://wordpress.com/help/contact for further help with this.
As you are not the domain owner we cannot discuss any details regarding this specific domain with you, and we also cannot discuss sensitive information like specific contact information here in the public support forums.

Make sure at https://wordpress.com/me/account/ that the email address on file for the WordPress.com account is correct, else you also won’t be receiving the email being sent there.
If necessary, update that first, and then try updating the contact info for the domain again.

Thanks! That’s the bit of information that we really needed! That the confirmation link for updating the domain email address would also be sent to the email address associated with the WordPress.com account. I must have missed that in your documentation.
This does seem to somewhat weaken the security provided by requiring confirmation via the old email address for changing the domain name email address.
