Changing MX record – it's just a number, no letters
-
Hi, I’ve been told by my url host to change the mx record – but the number I have doesn’t match the format listing in the example here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/custom-dns/ – it’s just a series of numbers (10 digits serparated by some full stops). Is there a way to enter this record correctly? Thanks a lot in advance!!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That’s not an MX record. That’s an IP address. Check again with your provider and show them the link you provided earlier on.

eek! I just called the provider again and was told that the mail record needs to point to the ip address (above) and the mx record needs to be mail.data.org.au
Does that sound right to you? -
No, it does not sound right.
Did you show your provider the URL I gave you? It would be the best thing to do, because they don’t seem to understand what you need. -
This is what I needed to do to make my mail work on my old host’s mail server.
A mail 255.255.255.255
MX 10 mail.my-domain.com.My old site had / has a static IP address. Hosts like Godaddy have a completely different look.

Thanks for joining in auxclass. So technically it could be something like:
A mail 203.170.86.65 MX ## mail.data.org.auBut wouldn’t we still need a priority number (## in my example)?
-
yes
The DNS records are real touchy for format – the format I got from my old host had to be changed a bit to run on WordPress.COM. Sort of different shorthand they explained to me.
MX ## mail.data.org.au.Note that I added a full stop character (period) to your example, else I am told it will crash or something.

Thanks both of you – I did show the url airodyssey, but I was just told to delete the extra name servers I had added to get email functioning, in order to get the site back up. It is back up online! But now the email of course isn’t working. I’m scared to add anymore server details in case it crashes again…. !

If all else fails, why not try Google Apps? It’s free and it works at WordPress.com.

Thank you so much – you’ve been hugely helpful. I had tried Google Apps but couldn’t figure out how to verify that the domain was mine. The page you sent me just showed me how. You’ve saved me a LOT of bother!! Thanks again.
